These days, everyone feels the financial pinch. Here in our company, we experience much of the same things you may be experiencing now in your tanning salon or tanning bed distributorship business. However, there are measures we can all take to be in a better position when the market rebounds.
This is the first of a 3-part series on these challenging economic times and what YOU can do to fortify your business.

You Cannot Control the Wind
Like many active professionals, my younger years were spent playing sports, especially football. I am still active, but enjoy a less body crushing sport, one that requires just as much mental prowess as it does physical skill, namely, competitive sailing.
I remember a particular race where a shift in the wind moved me from first to fifth place in a matter of minutes. Nothing I could have done differently would have prevented that initial setback, it's just part of the sport... Indeed, no one can control the wind, but you cannot let the wind control you.
Wouldn't you agree, such challenges are part of everything whether racing in the open ocean or running a tanning business. Sometimes things just don’t go your way. The wind shifts and in what seems to be an instant, you find yourself a notch back.
What does a good sailor do? Curse the wind? Of course not...
You make adjustments to your sails and seek to take advantage of the shift in the wind. After all, every boat in the race will likely be catching at least some of that same shift in the wind.
Navigating Cross Winds
While you can’t control the changing winds, you can, however, choose one of two things. You can say you were treated unfairly by circumstances or you can say “I’m getting back in front!”
Sure, it is easy to get dragged down by challenging times but talking about how bad things are does not serve to help your company. Just like the powerful winds in the high seas can make you lose control of your boat, negativity makes things more difficult, even dangerous for your business.
As we all navigate the tough economy, from tanning salon owners to tanning bed distributors, we must be cognizant of the tough times... but don’t dwell on them.
I believe, even in trying times, everyone can project the positive and neutralize the negative.
For example, perhaps your staff has come up with ways to save money on a new project or improve your services in some specific way. Advertising these innovations will raise everyone’s morale and keep the business moving forward.
The Power of Attitude
Here's something often said but seldom practiced: “Attitude is created from the top down”. To really take advantage of this fact, it is critical that key employees project a positive attitude so the rest of the company follows suit. This is what we strive for at ETS Tan and this is what we recommend for vendors, distributors and salon owners we partner with.
Part 2 of this 3-part series will delve more into the power of attitude and how this is critical for your business.
