I’m often asked about the proper way to tan. My answer? In a tanning bed!
Seriously though, if you’re tanning at a good salon, they will walk you back to your tanning room and show you exactly how everything on the tanning beds works – the timing system, the radio, the fans, everything.
Or, if you’re tanning on a home system, a good retailer (like ETS Tan) will teach you everything you need to know about your tanning bed from the regular maintenance to the proper way to tan in your system.
Here are a few tanning tips though that will help make your next tanning session a successful one:
Invest in a Good Indoor Lotion
To get a good tan, you want to use an indoor-approved tanning lotion. Other lotions can actually damage the acrylic of the tanning beds. Most front desk tanning salon staff will sell a wide range of lotions.
Get Nude
Most people tan in the nude – it’s the only way to get rid of tanning lines. Tanning salons sanitize the beds after every use, so it’s safe and hygienic. Remember though, if you’re new to tanning, you’ll be exposing parts of your body that may have never seen the sun, so take it slow at first to avoid burning.
Wear Tanning Goggles
Always wear your tanning goggles – they are an absolute must because UV-A rays can go right through your eyelids. Don’t worry, you’re not going to get raccoon eyes – that’s a myth. You’ll still get an all-over face tan, but your eyes will be safe and protected.
Relax
Try not to think too much during your tanning session, just get in the tanning bed and relax. Remember, this is “you-time.” You can listen to music, enjoy the rays and just chill out. This tactic won’t affect your tan, but you will leave your next tanning session feeling a lot more refreshed.
Moisturize After Every Tanning Session
After every session in the tanning beds, make sure you moisturize. This is critical to maintaining a good tan. Why? Because dry skin is flaky skin, meaning your tan will fade faster if you don’t keep your skin well-nourished.
