Ah, the elusive “virgin tanner,” that pale-bottomed individual who has never set foot in a tanning bed. While your repeat customers are most certainly your bread-and-butter, it’s those mysterious virgin tanners that are going to build your business.
Not only does a new tanner have the potential of becoming a valuable repeat customer, but they’re also more likely to talk about their experience and share it with others. For example, a few weeks ago I went for my first-ever acupuncture appointment. I’ve since told the story to numerous friends and now shared it here.
Why? Because it was a new and unique experience.
The result? Another friend of mine is going to try it too.
So, how do you attract new tanning bed customers? Here are 3 suggestions from some of our awesome salon partners...
Offer incentives to first-time tanning customers.
One of the best ways to attract new customers specifically is to offer them (through local advertising or direct mail campaigns) incentives like a reduced rate or a free first tanning session.
Reward existing customers for referring new tanners.
Word-of-mouth is a powerful marketing tool, so it’s time to start utilizing it. Set up a simple referral program and reward your existing customers for referring a new customer. Remember to educate your customers about it though – let them know how they refer someone (get the new customer to mention their name) and how they claim their reward.
Give your services to a good, local cause.
Is there a charity in your area holding an upcoming auction? What about a local school that’s looking for prizes for their annual fundraising draw. By donating a few tanning sessions, you’ll not only score a new customer, you’ll also advertise your business locally for free.
