Congressional Candidate Dino LaVerghetta Leads Small Business Owners’ Revolt Against the Tan Tax
New York, New York- On April 26th, Dino LaVerghetta, Republican congressional
candidate for New York’s 14th Congressional District, will join local
owners of indoor tanning businesses to speak out against Carolyn Maloney’s Tan
Tax. The press conference will be held at
Sunpoint Spa, 344 East 63rd Street in Manhattan at 2:00pm.
At the urging of Carolyn Maloney, a bizarre 10% tax on indoor tanning was slipped into the recently passed health care bill. The tax is expected to cause the loss of 9,000 jobs and the closure of 1,000 small businesses. The tax will have a disproportionate impact upon women as, unlike in most other industries, at least two-thirds of tanning salons are women-owned.
The health care bill initially contained a tax on cosmetic procedures, the so-called “Botax.” This tax was removed, however, at the urging of the powerful plastic surgery and dermatology lobbies, prominent backers of Carolyn Maloney. In a last-minute
closed-door move, Maloney, a longtime crusader against indoor tanning, slipped in her Tan Tax. This is a tax that Carolyn Maloney had proposed before, but she was never able to obtain support
for it on its own merits.
As most tanning salons are family-owned, the industry does not have a powerful lobby. Carolyn Maloney assumed that she could ignore their voice without consequence. Well, she was wrong. Dino LaVerghetta, the son of a small-business owner himself, has vowed to fight for these small
businesses and repeal this unfair tax on their livelihood. As part of his effort, Dino has launched the website www.repealthetantax.org
to educate the public on the Tan Tax and mobilize small-business owners. Dino is asking owners and customers of indoor tanning salons across the country to strike back at Carolyn Maloney by logging onto the site and making a donation to his campaign. If everyone makes just a small donation, Carolyn Maloney and the other representatives in Congress will finally hear
their voice loud and clear.
According to Dino, the Tan Tax is harmful on many levels:
- This is about jobs. When unemployment rates are at historically high levels, why would you
impose a tax that will cause 9,000 more Americans to lose their jobs?
- This is about small businesses and the economy. During a time of recession, it makes
absolutely no sense to tax already struggling businesses. Carolyn Maloney has never been a friend of small-business. With the Tan Tax, however, she has shown herself to be an outright enemy.
- This is about women. Carolyn Maloney is a self-proclaimed champion of women’s rights. Yet, she has launched an attack on one of the few industries where the vast majority of businesses are women-owned.
- This is about individual choice and the ever-increasing reach of the nanny-state. Carolyn Maloney’s philosophy is clear: if government doesn’t control it,
she’s not for it. In contrast, I believe that individuals are in a better position to make decisions about their own lives than the government.
- Finally, this is about corruption and misinformation. Citing false and misleading statistics and backed by self-interested lobbyists, Carolyn Maloney has sought to scare the public by perpetrating lopsided myths about the risks of UV Ray exposure. There is mounting scientific evidence that the Vitamin D deficiencies resulting from the avoidance of UV Rays actually causes far more numerous and far deadlier diseases than those caused by reasonable UV Ray exposure. Yet, Carolyn Maloney refused to meet with experts to discuss this evidence prior to imposing this crushing tax on small-business owners. Once again, Carolyn Maloney has been true to her reputation for taxing first and asking questions later.
